Reducing Leachate Treatment Costs, But How?

Leachate processing at landfills places significant demands on process technology. Landfill leachate contains a cocktail of various pollutants. In addition to biodegradable nitrogen compounds, this also includes a large number of other organic and inorganic pollutant groups that are fully or partially non-biodegradable. These substances have to be removed from the landfill leachate through cost-intensive physicochemical treatment. The requirements placed on the treated leachate depend on the way it is discharged. Legal framework specifications define the limits for direct or indirect dischargers.

Landfill leachate contains a composition of various pollutants. This causes costintensive treatments. To reduce leachate treatment costs, the “DeSiFloc” concept for landfill leachate treatment was developed. This concept contains a process chain that can be integrated in an existing process to increase its efficiency. Downstream of the biological pretreatment, the DeSiFloc removes non-biodegradable contents by agglomeration and flocculation followed by separation of the filterable materials. The separated contents can be disposed of as sludge. Since it is a rather simple and a very safe process, it is economical to operate and helps to keep the legal limits for direct or indirect dischargers. The DeSiFloc process replaces the whole filtration stage to reduce the load of the following activated carbon stage. As a result, the function of the activated carbon adsorption process can at best be reduced to a policing filter. Two examples of running DeSiFloc systems in leachate treatment plants prove the positive effect on the efficiency of the dewatering process and as a result on the costs.
